A few months ago when I first started my blog, I did a post about making granny squares, and shared that I would make a video in the future. Well, the future is now!! (haha, okay that was a bit corny.) Seriously, though, I am currently working on a video to share how I make my granny squares. They're not super hard, but can be a bit tedious.
The first step to making a Granny Square is to make your circle. There are 2 ways that can be done. I prefer to make a chain of 4 and then slip stitch back to the beginning, or the first chain. But you can also make a magic circle, or my version of a magic circle.
The next step is a chain 3, which counts as your first double crochet, and will continue to count as a DC, double crochet, throughout the square. Then you crochet 2 more DC. This will create your first "cluster". To create your corner you will need to chain 3 then make another "cluster" or 3 DC. You will continue to repeat this until you have 4 "clusters" and 4 chain 3's. On the last chain 3 you will slip stitch into the third chain of the first cluster, which will close the square.
To move to the next round, you will chain 4, this will count as a DC and a chain 1. Then you will create your first corner. In order to create that corner you will make 3 DC, chain 3, 3 DC. Next, you will chain 1 to jump to the next corner. You will repeat this until you have reached the final corner. In the final corner you will create a 3DC "cluster", chain3, then crochet 2 DC and slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the starting chain 4, to close the corner and create the final 3DC "cluster".
Round 3 will be made in a similar way to round 2. The only difference is where you chained 1 in between the corners, you will now be crocheting a 3DC "cluster" into that space.
You can continue to make this granny square as big or small as you like. You can even crochet an entire blanket using this method. Or you can make a hundred or more squares and then sew them together to create a blanket. The choice is all up to you.
